Public Schools
Public education in the Tuscaloosa area is divided into two systems, Tuscaloosa City Schools and Tuscaloosa County Schools. In both systems, the school your child attends is determined by the location in which you live. Both are fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Alabama Department of Education.
Tuscaloosa City Schools
The Tuscaloosa City School system serves those who live within the Tuscaloosa city limits. Students in the system number nearly 10,000 at 12 neighborhood elementary schools, three middle schools, and four high schools. Alternative schools are also available including the Tuscaloosa Center For Technology, Parkview Learning Center, and Oak Hill School, offering specialized services for handicapped students. The Tuscaloosa City School system was recently selected as one of 17 Alabama systems for the “What Parents Want Most” national award. This award recognizes schools for excellence in areas such as competitive academic test scores, national average expenditures and small class sizes.
The Tuscaloosa City Schools has implemented an aggressive Five-Year Facilities Plan. Projects completed include new facilities for Alberta Elementary and two new high schools. Additional projects include new facilities at Eastwood Middle School; complete renovation of Central High School-West; relocation of the Tuscaloosa Center for Technology program to Central High School-East; and building of a multipurpose room for Verner Elementary.
