APPLICATION FOR TRANSFER STATUS:

The University of Alabama School of Law admits several transfer students each year. Students interested in completing their studies at the Law School are welcome to apply. Transfer students at Alabama Law have experienced a smooth transition both into the Law School environment and into Tuscaloosa. Moreover, transfer students are offered opportunities to join student organizations, journals, trial advocacy and moot court competition teams, clinics, and social activities.

There are four publications at Alabama Law: Alabama Law Review, The Journal of the Legal Profession, Law & Psychology Review, and Alabama Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Review. All transfer students are eligible to participate in the write-on competition for the Law & Psychology Review and Alabama Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Review. If a transfer student is in the top 50% of his or her class, he or she may participate in the write-on competition for the Alabama Law Review. Transfer students in the top 25% of their previous law school automatically grade-on to The Journal of the Legal Profession.

Tryouts for the Trial Advocacy Teams are held a week prior to the commencement of the Fall semester of the second year. Interested transfer students are invited to tryout for the team. More information on the Trial Advocacy tryouts may be found online at http://www.law.ua.edu/trialad. The Campbell Moot Court Competition takes place in Spring Semester of the second year.

The Law School offers seven clinical opportunities to provide second- and third-year students with hands-on experience. Alabama is one of the few law schools in the country that guarantees every student an opportunity to gain clinical experience before graduating.

This is just a sampling of what is available to students at The University of Alabama School of Law. Please feel free to contact the Admissions Office at (205) 348-5440 for a tour or to meet with a member of the Admissions staff. You may find more information on visiting the Law School here: http://www.law.ua.edu/visiting/.

Admissions Requirements:

A student who has attended a law school that is accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and that is a member of the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) may be considered for admission to The University of Alabama School of Law with advanced standing. The majority of students transferring to Alabama Law have completed their first year of law school. However, some extraordinary students are considered for early admission as a transfer student. Please contact the Admission Office for more information on early consideration to start in Fall 2010 or for consideration to begin Spring 2010.

A transfer applicant must have a competitive college academic record and LSAT score; must be in good standing and eligible to continue his or her studies at the law school previously attended; and must not be on any type of probationary status. An applicant's first-year law school grades are significant in the admissions process. It is rare for the Law School to approve a transfer when an applicant is ranked below about the top 25% of his or her current law school class.

A transfer applicant also must submit:
» A Law School J.D. application and fee. Please mark the box indicating you are applying as a “Transfer” at the top of the application. You may apply online through LSAC, print and complete the application above, or request an application from the Admissions Office at admissions@law.ua.edu.
» A statement explaining why you desire to enroll with advanced standing.
» A letter of good standing and your class rank from your law school Records Office.
» An LSDAS report. The Alabama Admissions Office will request an LSDAS report from LSAC; or, if you applied to Alabama’s Law School as an incoming first year in the preceding year, the Admissions Committee will review the LSDAS report from your previous application.
» One official law school transcript showing grades in all courses completed in law school. The Admissions Committee will review completed applications on a rolling basis. An application is complete after all the above material is received by the Law School.

No more than 30 credit hours may be transferred for law school graduation credit.
The application deadline for Fall Semester is July 20. If you have questions, please call Ms. Page Pulliam at (205) 348-4222 or email the Admissions Office at admissions@law.ua.edu.
