Students who want to expand their skills in appellate advocacy beyond the first year legal writing course can participate in the 2L Moot Court Competition course. Combining instruction in advanced brief writing and oral advocacy with numerous oral arguments in which students receive extensive feedback, the competition course is an excellent way to hone skills.
Students also have the opportunity to compete against students in other law schools by participating in moot court competitions all across the country. Most members of competition teams are selected from among the participants in the 2L Moot Court Competition course. In moot court competitions, students write a brief that is graded by judges and take on the role of lawyers in a simulated appellate court oral arguments before a panel of judges. Finally, students who participate in the 2L Moot Court Competition may also be selected to serve on the Moot Court Board, whose members organize and judge the 2L Moot Court Competition.
