Qualifications for Admission to the Bar

In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction. Applicants are encouraged to determine the requirements for any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission by contacting the jurisdiction. Addresses for all relevant agencies are available through the National Conference of Bar Examiners. A JD degree from the University of Alabama School of Law, an ABA-accredited law school, satisfies the degree requirement needed to sit for the bar exam in any U.S. jurisdiction. However, the bar of each jurisdiction may impose other requirements to practice law, such as character and fitness qualifications, a passing score on a bar examination, and / or specific coursework. Admission to or a degree from the School of Law does not guarantee that an applicant will satisfy the other requirements of a state bar.
