Last month, the University of Alabama School of Law dedicated the Alex W. Newton Fountain & Courtyard—honoring the late Alex Worthy Newton (’57). Mr. Newton, who received the Sam W. Pipes Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Law School in 1982, was a trial lawyer with Hare, Wynn, Newell & Newton, LLP for more than 60 years. In 2007, he was named Lawyer of the Year by the Birmingham Bar Association. The fountain was designed by Caleb O’Connor.
Named “The Splash” the fountain represents the ripple effect a single act can have on others and on a community. In terms of impact, Mr. Newton’s example and his legacy extend beyond the limits of his own life—making a difference not only for those he interacted with as a student, lawyer, father, spouse, and grandfather, but on the many generations of law students who have and will come after him at the Law School. His “splash” created a ripple effect that will influence others to succeed and do good as they each make their own mark on the Law School, the legal profession, and the communities in which they live.
On October 14, Alabama Law hosted its annual Alumni Homecoming Tailgate on the front lawn of the Law School. Last month, the Alabama Law Criminal Defense Clinic, led by Professor Amy Kimpel and students Hannah King and Bachittar Singh, partnered with Outside the Walls to host an Expungement Clinic at Shelton State Community College. There they held the first of a two-part session to help individuals navigate the process of cleaning up their criminal record. The Clinic provided free legal services to over 40 members of the community.
Outside the Walls, is a coalition made up of 14 local churches dedicated to helping individuals with reentry after incarceration. Retired Alabama Law professor Pam Bucy Pierson runs Outside the Walls along with formerly incarcerated community organizer, Trinese McDowell.
Alabama Law students walked participants through the process of conducting initial screenings for eligibility, assisting with motions to waive or reduce outstanding fees and helping with applications to ALEA to review their criminal records. Professor Yuri Linetsky also provided free fingerprinting and notary services were provided by the Law School Clinic program assistant, Crystal Lucio.
For more information about the Clinics or assistance with the expungement process call (205) 348-4960 or email lawclinics@law.ua.edu.
